3G iPhone Connection Problems Chip-Related?

Per GigaOM the poor 3G reception of the 3G iPhone may be related to the Infineon 3G chip it is using. According to Nomura Securities, the problem the issues are typical of an immature chipset and radio protocol stack, which isn't likely to be solved with firmware updates. This implies Apple will have to replace the chips so users get the performance they were promised.
