Connect your iPhone and Bluetooth keyboard
From Engadget -
There's finally a means by which to connect the iPhone or iPod touch to a Bluetooth keyboard. The catch is you need to jailbreak your unit first as the BTstack Keyboard app is now available for $5 only at the Cydia store.
Note while the app provides rapid responsiveness throughout, whether in Safari, composing text messages or blog posts, the command, cut, copy, paste, and highlighting functions are not yet active.
Video here.

iPhone 2010 Will Have 5MP Camera
From Digitimes -
OmniVision Technologies is projecting CMOS image sensor (CIS) orders for the Apple iPhone to grow to 40-45 million units in 2010 from the estimated 20-21 million this year. It has also secured 5-megapixel CIS orders for the next-gen iPhone which will hit the retail shelves during the second half of 2010. The company currently supplies the 3.2-megapixel CIS for the iPhone 3GS, beating out Aptina Imaging which had supplied the 2-megapixel CIS solution for the iPhone 3G.
Including orders for iPods, OmniVision's total shipments to Apple is estimated at around 65 million units for the year.

How to Change your Root Password
From http://mr09.fileave.com/ -
1. Get an SSH program like putty for windows.
2. SSH to your iPhone. (This may take a while.)
3. A warning about a key fingerprint may appear. You can just accept that.
4. Login using username "root" and password "alpine". (the default password)
5. Type "passwd".
6. You will be asked for a new password. Enter your new password.
The reason you have to change the default password is that by default this is "alpine". That means hackers can access your iPhone if you don't change this.

Cell Phone Credit Cards: The Next Big Thing?
From I4U News -
According to the New York Times a company named Boku have turned phones into credit cards by allowing users to charge online purchases straight to their cell bill. Unfortunately, the carrier eats up 50% of the cost, while Boku takes another 5-10%. That's a whopping 60% of the price, leaving little profit for the merchant.
Another company, Obopay, have developed services that let people send money via text messages to other people. A lot of different companies are working on other ways to make mobile shopping easier, especially since more and more consumers start to use their smartphones as their primary Internet devices. However, the revenue sharing scheme has to be worked out first.

Whoever Steals Your iPhone Can Just Turn Off Find My iPhone Location Tracking
From Gizmodo -
Find My iPhone can track your iPhone, send harassing messages, etc. It works, but an iPhone thief can just turn off tracking right from the unit by going into Settings, then hit Mail, Contact, Calendars and click on the MobileMe account. Turn off Find My iPhone and all those tracking the unit will get is a little yellow warning symbol when they try to track it if the phone's been previously located.
Even if the thief is not smart enough to dig into the MobileMe account setting, all he has to do is turn off Location Services under General settings—that also cripples Find My iPhone.

Maza Digital Drivetrain for iPhone is Rejected
From Gizmodo -
Maza Digital's Drivetrain, a remote front end for its Transmission, which is a Mac/PC BitTorrent client, has been rejected by Applem who sent a reply stating: This category of applications is often used for the purpose of infringing third party rights. We have chosen to not publish this type of application to the App Store.
Ironically, even if BitTorrent is presumably used to download copyrighted material, Drivetrain itself doesn't do anything illegal at all: It just controls the software on the PC and doesn't use the iPhone itself for piracy.

iPhone Video Recording Interface, Digital Compass, Voice Control and Auto-Focus Camera
MacRumors has a screenshot, discovered in the latest iPhone 3.0 beta, that shows a video recording interface. As seen above, the interface shows icons on the bottom right which toggles between still shots and video recording. The video recording is not presently functional in iPhone 3.0 beta, and the interface is not accessible by default. Only when configuration files were modified telling the firmware a Video Camera was present will it appear.
Apple is expected to release iPhone 3.0 this summer, hopefully, together with the new iPhone.

T-Mobile Germany iPhone 3G Deal points towards new iPhone
From I4U -
For April, new T-Mobile Germany iPhone 3G customers get the iPhone for 1 Euro, a 30 Euro iTunes Gift Card, 2 months of free service and free activation. Compare this to the lowest unlimited data plan selling for $60/month (44.95 Euro/month, Complete S). AT&T charges $199 for the iPhone and the Data plan and the lowest voice plan add up to $69.99.
It is a very tempting deal but lock-in period is two years. And if the new iPhone really gets released in June, takers will likely get buyers remorse or at the very least, "new iPhone 2009 envy".

Stanford will start distributing a popular computer science course on developing iPhone apps for free as a video podcast through iTunes U. Considering that more than 25,000 iPhone apps are available, with an aggregate total of more than 800 million downloads, the competition is fierce.
Apple itself provides a considerable information for developers but for those who need a little more guidance or a refresher course, watching these videos is like continuing education. The videos are not on iTunes yet, but the first one should appear very soon.

Per GigaOM, Skype is almost ready to launch that iPhone version, perhaps as soon as next week. CTIA Wireless kicks off in Las Vegas next Wednesday, so perhaps the announcement will be made there.
The biggest clue about Skype’s pending iPhone launch came when iSkoot decided to move on from its Skype-centric strategy. The company had been offering a client that allowed cell phone users to use Skype services. Skype already offers a Windows Mobile version of its client.

Apple sued for promoting iPhone as eBook reader
From Apple Insider -
Switzerland-based MONEC Holding Ltd has filed a complaint with a Virginia district court against Apple of patent infringement, unfair trade practices, monopolization, and tortious interference for allegedly treading on its January 2002 patent No. 6,335,678 titled "Electronic device, preferably an electronic book."
The firm alleges Apple's move to distribute digital book reading apps through the App Store directly violates its patent, which describes a "light-weight" electronic device with a "touch-screen" LCD-display having the "dimensions such that [...] approximately one page of a book can be illustrated at normal size, this display being integrated in a flat, frame-like housing."

* The $99 3G netbook will start selling this summer, and the first one won’t be a Windows OS.

iPhone 3.0 beta firmware FAQ
Engadget has posted a very informative FAQ on the iPhone 3.0. Some sample questions (and answers):
How do I get this thing?
Well, unfortunately you need to be part of the developer program (which costs $99).
Whatevs, I just got it off of BitTorrent!
Okay, but it may not work. Your iPhone's unique ID must be authorized for the 3.0 upgrade, and Apple checks that. So until someone cracks the 3.0 beta firmware image, you have to be a registered developer, or know somebody who can hook you up, pretty much.
Is it stable enough for real use?
So far, yes.
Does the iPod app do anything significantly different?
Yes! For audiobooks and podcasts there's a playback speed option now (1/2, 1, and 2x), a 30 second replay (á la TiVo), and some mail function which isn't yet implemented. There's also variable-rate scrubbing for that content.
Does copy/paste extend to the URL bar in Safari? From jomolungma
Yes! Copy and paste has been working in a lot more places than I might have expected, even (especially in 3rd party apps).
Does 3.0 allow you to record video?
Apple announced over 1,000 new APIs in iPhone OS 3.0, but video wasn't mentioned. Video recording isn't present in the default app set as of right now, but I wouldn't entirely rule it out.
Is there a unified inbox? You know, some place where all my many mobile inboxes can funnel into on spot?
Oh man, I wish. But no, sorry, that's not on the features list this time around.
Does 3.0 support the in-line volume control the newer Apple headphones? From anthonyfriday
It doesn't enable in-line volume control on the iPhone 3G, unfortunately. (Play/pause, etc. still work). The iPod touch 2nd-gen should still have that function, though.
You can read the complete list here.

AT&T to sell iPhone without contract
From The Associated Press -
AT&T will start selling iPhones next Thursday without requiring a two-year contract, but they will cost $400 more. The 8GB will go for $599 while the 16GB model will go for $699. The two models respectively cost $199 and $299 under contract.
The new phones will still be "locked" to AT&T and won't work with any other cellular carrier unless they're modified. AT&T will only activate them on the regular iPhone plans, which include a $30 monthly charge for data access. Prepaid service will not be available.
Apple is widely expected to release a new version of the phone this summer.

iPhone 3.0 OS Reveals New iPhones, iPods and the Mysterious "iProd"
From Gizmodo -
The iPhone 3.0 OS has references to brand new iPhone models, namely, - iPhone3,1; iPod3,1; iFPGA; and iProd0,1. Since the original iPhone is known as iPhone1,1 and the iPhone 3G is iPhone1,2, the new models' number references, particularly iPhone3,1 and iPod3,1, imply major revisions.
On the other hand the iFPGA model—as in field-programmable gate arrays—is likely something never to be released. As for the iProd, the string 0,1 indicates it's a prototype or codename, since products are released at 1,1. It could be anything - a touchscreen tablet or a netbook, perhaps.

Casinos on alert for card counters using iPhones
From TUAW -
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that Nevada gaming authorities are warning casinos about gamblers using an iPhone app to count blackjack cards. (Card counting per se is not banned in Nevada, but the use of technology to count cards is a felony.)
But now iPhone apps like Card Counter or A Blackjack Card Counter has made it much easier to cheat. In particular, the latter's stealth mode use of vibration to alert the user when the time is right for a big bet makes it difficult for casino security to catch the user.

Eos Converge™ System Streams Music Wirelessly
From BusinessWire -
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Eos™ Wireless, the leader in wireless audio products, today unveiled Eos Converge™, a remarkably simple, incredibly versatile new way to stream music from a Mac/PC iPod/iPhone, Apple TV or other audio source into every area of the house.
“In the digital age your music lives on your computer, but your computer doesn’t live where you want your music. That’s all about to change,” says Jeff O’Shea, Executive Vice President of IntelliTouch and the creator of the Eos Converge Wireless System. Eos Converge brings not just some, but all the music from your computer, iPod, iPhone or other music device into every room of your house, all wirelessly and with pure digital sound quality. No more moving your music source from room to room, dock to dock just to hear your music. Simply connect the Eos Converge transmitter to a Mac/PC, iPod, iPhone, Apple TV or other audio device and stream pure digital, CD quality audio everywhere -- through walls, floors, doors and ceilings, upstairs, downstairs, inside and out. With a wireless range of up to 150 feet, Eos Converge is a rock-solid wireless transmitter/receiver system solution that harmoniously coexists with any other WiFi, Bluetooth and other wireless devices.
Eos Converge has the flexibility to play virtually any kind of digital music, from nearly any source. By connecting to a computer via USB port, users can listen to their entire lineup of tracks from iTunes, or from Pandora, Rhapsody or any MP3 music player, as well as thousands of Internet radio stations. Even XM, Sirius Radio and other MP3 players are also supported through the transmitter’s auxiliary port.
Best of all, when used with any iPhone/iPod Touch and Apple’s “Remote” application (available as a free download from Apple’s App Store) users can remotely control music selection and playback through their existing home WiFi network. “No longer are you limited to the songs stored on your iPod or iPhone, you get your entire music library. With an iPhone or iPod Touch and Apple’s “Remote” App, all your artists, all your songs and all your playlists are available and from the palm of your hand,” says O’Shea. Apple’s Remote App allows users to search, select and play music, just like they were sitting in front of their computer. The Remote App also enables users to display album cover artwork on their iPhone or iPod Touch as well as allowing them to globally control the system volume to all Eos Converge wireless receivers.
To suit the needs of any home or audio system, the Eos Converge system offers multiple and interchangeable receiver components that can be mixed-and-matched with any Eos Converge Transmitter or Original Eos iPod Docking station to address up to four areas of the home, including outdoor patios and pool areas:
Group 1—Designed for home theater and home stereo systems, Group 1 receivers provide the long sought-after link between a computer music library and a home’s primary audio system. Just plug the receiver directly into any device with an auxiliary audio input jack and begin hearing CD quality audio from your collection. Group 1 receivers also feature individual track control so you can play, pause and skip forward or back from your receiver location.
Group 2—Group 2 receivers feature a powerful, high-quality amplifier with outputs to connect any audio speaker. Like Group 1 units, Group 2 receivers feature individual track control for easy music management.
Group 3—The ultimate Eos Converge solution—a fully self-contained, amazingly portable receiver/amplifier/speaker system that plugs into any wall outlet. Featuring integrated, amplified 2.1 stereo loudspeakers, Group 3 systems instantly link with Eos Converge transmitters to create a total audio system for use anywhere, indoors or out.
